10 Move-In Essentials Students Always Forget to Pack
The start of a new semester is exciting! You’re thinking about classes, meeting new friends, decorating your room, and settling into campus life.
As you pack, it’s easy to remember the big items like bedding, clothes, and basic school supplies. The challenge is remembering the small things that make a huge difference once you’re actually living on campus.
Before you head to campus, make sure these often-forgotten essentials are in your move-in checklist.
These are the items students frequently wish they had packed on day one.
1. Shower Shoes
Shower shoes are one of the easiest items to forget when packing, but they’re definitely a move-in essential.
Living in a dorm is a great way to build community and get to know the people around you, and shared spaces quickly become part of your daily routine. A comfortable pair of shower shoes makes trips to and from the bathroom easy and convenient, helping you feel prepared from your very first day at Nelson.
2. A Basic First Aid Kit and Small Tool Kit
Some of the most useful items in your residence hall room are the ones you hope you never need.
A small first aid kit stocked with bandages, pain relievers, allergy medicine, and other essentials can help you handle minor illnesses and injuries without a late-night trip to the store.
Pair it with a basic tool kit that includes items like a screwdriver, scissors, measuring tape, and batteries.
Whether you’re assembling storage solutions or dealing with an unexpected headache, these simple supplies can save time, reduce stress, and help you feel prepared for everyday college life.
3. Command Hooks and Damage-Free Hanging Strips
You’ve packed the pictures, posters, and decorations. Now don’t forget the thing that actually puts them on the wall.
Command hooks and damage-free strips are move-in day heroes, helping you hang everything from photos and calendars to towels and backpacks. They take up almost no space in your packing list, but they’re often one of the first things students realize they need.

4. A Laundry Basket with Handles
Laundry may not be the most exciting part of college life, but it becomes a weekly reality very quickly.
A sturdy laundry basket with comfortable handles makes trips to the laundry room much easier. Some students prefer collapsible baskets that save space when not in use.
5. A Long Phone Charger and Portable Charger
Your phone quickly becomes one of the most important tools you bring to college. From checking class schedules and emailing with professors to staying connected with friends and finding your way around campus, you’ll rely on it throughout the day.
A portable charger helps keep your battery alive during long days of classes, study sessions, and campus events, while an extra-long charging cable makes it easy to charge your devices even when outlets aren’t conveniently located near your bed or desk.
Together, these simple items can save you from the frustration of a dead battery when you need your phone most.
6. Business Casual and Professional Clothing
Whether you’re giving a class presentation, attending a networking event, interviewing for a job or internship, or participating in a special campus function, having at least one professional outfit can help you feel prepared and confident.
The good news is you don’t need an entire business wardrobe. Even one blazer paired with dress pants, a button-down shirt, or another polished outfit can be enough to help you make a strong first impression when the opportunity arises.
7. Important Documents Folder
As you prepare for move-in day, don’t forget to organize the information you’ll need throughout the semester.
Having quick access to items like your class schedule, housing details, financial aid information, and key contact information can make the first few weeks of the semester much smoother.
Whether you use a physical folder, a secure digital file, or both, keeping important information organized can save time and reduce stress when questions come up.

8. Weather-Ready Gear
Every Texan knows the weather likes to keep things interesting. A warm, sunny afternoon can turn into a chilly, rainy evening faster than you might expect. While most people think of Texas heat, North Texas also gets its share of cold, wet winter days that can feel surprisingly brisk.
Packing a few weather-ready essentials like an umbrella, rain jacket, warm layers, and waterproof shoes can help you stay comfortable no matter what the forecast decides to do. It’s one of those move-in necessities that’s easy to overlook until the first unexpected weather day arrives.
9. Cleaning Supplies
A clean room creates a better environment for studying, resting, and hosting friends.
Simple supplies like disinfecting wipes, paper towels, trash bags, and all-purpose cleaner can help you keep your space fresh throughout the semester. Many students assume someone else will bring these items, only to realize they need them immediately.
10. Food, Snacks, and Water Bottles
Move-in day can be busy, and the first few days of the semester often feel like a whirlwind of unpacking, orientation activities, and meeting new people. Having a supply of bottled water, a reusable water bottle, and a few favorite non-perishable snacks on hand can help keep you fueled while you get settled in.
Granola bars, crackers, trail mix, popcorn, and other shelf-stable snacks are great options for late-night study sessions or busy days between classes. It’s a simple move-in essential that can make your first week on campus much more comfortable.
