Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Instructor Amy George recently had the opportunity have her poem titled, “The Plan,” published as part of a series entitled Poems for Ephesians .

“It’s a definite honor to be included among the work of some really wonderful poetic voices and gifted colleagues,” said George.

Poems for Ephesians is a web journal consisting of poetry through images, ideas, and inspirations of the Book of Ephesians. It is an ongoing project presented by D.S. Martin, McMaster Divinity College (MDC) Poet-in-Residence, who is also the editor of the Poiema Poetry Series for Wipf and Stock Publishers.

“The Plan” is a reflection of the beauty in God’s creation specifically the divine purpose bestowed upon us. “I really hope that readers will get a renewed sense of ownership in the Missio Dei,” she said. “We are all God’s workmanship, created for His purposes, not our own. If we can live with a sense of mission, we will better serve Him and others.”

George found out about the series through a poetic colleague, Marjorie Maddox, who has published several books and teaches at Lock Haven University. George wrote a review of a book of Maddox’s entitled, ” Transplant, Transport, Transubstantiation “, which is part of the Poiema Poetry Series. It was through her interactions with Maddox that eventually led her to “Poems for Ephesians,” as Maddox herself also had a poem published in the same web journal.

George began to write poems at 13 years old after being inspired by the poem, “ Love’s Philosophy ” by Percy Bysshe Shelley and by her love of the Book of Psalms in the Bible.

When asked if she will keep writing poetry and pursuing publication, George answered in the affirmative, adding, “I just want God to use me.”

For George, poetry is a passion: “Poetry speaks in ways prose cannot because people have different expectations for the genre; we poets can get away with moving people through images instead of laying everything out for them. This makes it a genre I’ll continue to pursue and work within.”
