WAXAHACHIE, Texas — March 19, 2026 —Nelson University is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Irby McKnight, a beloved leader and mentor whose impact on the university and its community will be felt for generations.
McKnight served Nelson University as the Vice President of University Advancement from 2007- 2018. During that time, he brought forward the idea of reviving The Harvesters as a southern gospel quartet to help raise support for the university.
Under McKnight’s leadership, The Harvesters traveled across numerous states and countries, helping raise support for scholarships, university initiatives and facilities. Over the years, nearly twenty students had the opportunity to serve in the group, gaining both ministry and performance experience.
Known for his warmth and genuine spirit, McKnight was deeply loved by students, faculty, and staff. He had a rare ability to make every person feel seen and valued, connecting with others in a way that quickly turned strangers into lifelong friends.

Often, in his role as VP of Advancement, when he came across a student struggling to pay tuition, he would quietly work behind the scenes, finding donors who would ensure they had the support needed to continue their education. Because of him, many students were able to complete their degrees and pursue their calling.
He was marked by deep compassion, a contagious laugh, and his signature desserts that made everyone feel at home. McKnight’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the students he uplifted, and the enduring spirit of generosity and kindness he modeled so faithfully.
“Irby’s tenure leading the office of Advancement was characterized as a season of significant growth and development at the university,” said President Bridges. “It was a pleasure to work alongside this wonderful brother in serving our alma mater, a place we dearly love.”
Irby is survived by his wife, Vicki; his son, Jordan (Mary Jo); his daughter, Erin (Nathan); and his cherished grandchildren.
“Irby’s legacy is one of faith, leadership, and personal connection,” said Director for Student Success, Amy Trober, who was his Executive Assistant. “He leaves behind a university community that is stronger because of his service and a ministry that continues to impact lives.”
A visitation will be held at 12:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, at Trinity Lighthouse Church in Denison, Texas.
Nelson University extends its heartfelt prayers and condolences to the McKnight family during this time.
