“As a young person, I knew I wanted to do church ministry—to be a pastor, to do something entrepreneurial in the business world, and I wanted to be a millionaire.”

For many people, those ambitions might seem far from a degree in Church Ministries. 

For Benji Allen, however, the journey from ministry student to entrepreneur was never about choosing one path over another. It was about discovering how faith, leadership, and business could work together to create lasting impact.

Benji graduated from Nelson University in 1995 with a degree in Church Ministries. While many students spend their college years exploring future possibilities, Benji was already immersed in ministry. Throughout his undergraduate studies, he served on staff at a large church, gaining hands-on leadership experience while completing his education.

Those who knew Benji during those years remember a young man full of passion, energy, and ambition. He was eager to learn, eager to lead, and eager to make a difference.

Like many driven young leaders, Benji was sometimes more enthusiastic than experienced. The same determination that created challenges also became one of his greatest strengths. It pushed him to take risks, embrace opportunities, and pursue the goals he believed God had placed before him.

Nelson helped provide a foundation for that journey.

At Nelson, Benji developed a deeper understanding of ministry, leadership, and service. He learned that effective leadership is not simply about vision. It is about character, stewardship, and the ability to serve people well. Those lessons would prove valuable far beyond the walls of the church.

After graduation, Benji continued serving in full-time ministry. Over the years, he worked in a variety of church leadership roles and became involved in a church plant, helping build a ministry from the ground up. Church planting requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to step into uncertainty. It also requires many of the same skills needed to launch a successful business.

Looking back, those experiences became part of a larger preparation process. The entrepreneurial dream that had been with him since childhood never disappeared.

He remained drawn to the business world and the possibility of building something of his own. Eventually, Benji took the leap and started his own business, transforming a lifelong ambition into reality.

His story reflects a truth that many Nelson graduates discover: a ministry degree does not limit where God can lead you. Instead, it equips you with skills that can be applied in virtually any field. Leadership, communication, problem-solving, team building, and a commitment to serving others are valuable whether you’re leading a congregation, launching a company, or managing an organization.

Today, Benji’s journey stands as an example of what can happen when faith and ambition work together rather than compete with one another.

The young man who dreamed of entrepreneurship stepped into the calling God placed before him. The ministry student who spent his college years serving in the local church never abandoned the lessons learned there. Instead, he carried them into every season that followed.
