Behind the Music: Mighty Lions Marching Band Gets Ready for Fall
WAXAHACHIE, Texas (Aug. 14, 2026) — Before most students move into residence halls or step into their first class of the semester, the Mighty Lions Marching Band is already hard at work.
Under the Texas summer sun, student musicians returned to campus for training camp, preparing for a season of performances at Nelson University football games and campus events. During camp, students:
- Learn and memorize music for the upcoming season
- Master marching techniques and field formations
- Build physical endurance through daily rehearsals
- Develop teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills

Every step, every note, and every formation requires focus and commitment. By the end of camp, students are not only stronger performers but also more confident leaders prepared to represent Nelson University on and off the field.
For many members of the Mighty Lions Marching Band, the work goes beyond preparing for halftime performances. It is an opportunity to use their gifts in worship and service.
“As a group, we want to show the Nelson community this year that worship comes in many different shapes and sizes, as you’ll especially see with our halftime show. Our instructors and students have all been working diligently to bring a new perspective to Nelson, and we hope that this year, we can put ourselves out there and show everyone what marching band really can be,” said Aidan Blair, Music Education student and one of the leaders for the Mighty Lions Marching Band.
That commitment was evident throughout training camp as students pushed through the heat, encouraged one another, and pursued excellence together. Their dedication reflects Nelson University’s mission of developing students who lead with faith, purpose, and integrity.
“The Mighty Lions Marching Band has given students a new group to find community and a new way to express their commitment to living for Christ by applying the specific gifts He has given them. We take pride in executing our craft in excellence for the glory of God!” Director of Athletic Bands, Elizabeth De La Rosa, said.
As excitement builds for the start of the fall semester, the Mighty Lions Marching Band is eager to share the results of their hard work with the Nelson community. Fans attending football games this season can expect spirited performances, powerful music, and a halftime experience designed to inspire and engage.

Through perseverance, preparation, and a shared passion for honoring God through music, the Mighty Lions Marching Band is ready to take the field.
