Local Children and Youth ‘Soared’ into STEAM Camp at Nelson University
Waxahachie, TX (June 30, 2026) — From June 22–26, Nelson University hosted its third annual STEAM Camp, welcoming students from kindergarten through eighth grade for a week of hands-on learning and creativity centered around science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
The camp hosted its largest group to date, with 108 students attending from Waxahachie and surrounding areas. Campers did everything from flying drones to making paper airplanes, exploring a variety of STEAM concepts throughout the week.
“We integrate faith in everything we do,” said Dr. Khristy Strange, Camp Director and Director of Teacher Education at Nelson University. “For instance, this year’s theme is all about air. We’re soaring into knowledge. We talk about how God made the birds—their wingspan—and how God gave the Wright brothers knowledge to create the first airplane. We talk about faith in everything we do.”

Campers were guided by a team of Nelson University alumni, including recent graduates and experienced teachers, creating a dynamic and supportive learning environment. For many instructors, the camp is just as rewarding as it is for students.
Ms Amanda Verkleir, a 2026 Nelson University graduate, led the first- and second-grade group. “They are just a ball of energy—they are so fun,” she said. “We made bird kites one day, and it was exciting to talk about why some flew and some didn’t. It opened the door to conversations about aerodynamics.”
Mrs. Kylee Strange, a Nelson University graduate who has served with STEAM Camp since its beginning and brings four years of public school teaching experience, said, “One of the joys about teaching STEAM Camp is getting to pour into both the spiritual and educational side of students… It was amazing to hear the students talk about their unique gifts! One student raised his hand and said ‘I feel like God has already spoken to me to use my abilities to be a missionary.’”
Beyond the experiments and projects, one of the camp’s defining features is its accessibility. Nelson University intentionally keeps costs low to ensure more families can participate.
“I want to keep the cost lower than most camps. We are doing it for the community,” Dr. Strange explained, emphasizing that the STEAM camp’s priority is, “To be a light in the community.”

Parents also saw the impact firsthand. Mrs. Jessy Fredrickson, a parent of two campers, shared, “Our family has been attending Nelson’s STEAM camp since the very first year… My boys come home full of stories and excited to share what they’ve created… We are so grateful to have an awesome camp over the summer that makes learning both fun and meaningful.”
By the end of the week, students left with more than finished projects—they gained confidence, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of how faith, science, and creativity come together.
