WAXAHACHIE, Texas — March 26, 2026 — At a time when many churches are facing decline across the U.S., Nelson University has partnered with Visalia First, led by Dr. Mark Merrill, in Visalia, California to equip leaders who are prepared to guide the Church forward with wisdom and clarity.

Through Catalyst Bible College, this ongoing partnership reflects one of more than 35 partner sites within Nelson’s growing network. Each partnership, or School of Ministry is committed to equipping students for ministry while removing barriers that often stand in the way of their calling.

At the heart of Catalyst the belief that everyone can major in changing the world, and that calling should not be limited by cost. Through churches, donors, and scholarship initiatives, including more than $100,000 in annual scholarships, students are able to pursue ministry preparation and graduate with little to no debt. Already, graduates are stepping into ministry without the financial burden that so often delays or limits their calling.

Catalyst offers many degrees through Nelson, however, the Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership, is a program designed to prepare leaders to step into real challenges facing today’s Church. The emphasis is teaching leaders to lead change, strengthen communities, and help ministries grow in healthy, sustainable ways.

“The Church doesn’t just need more leaders; it needs leaders who are prepared to lead meaningful change,” said Dr. Mike Clarensau, Vice President of Academics at Catalyst Bible College. “Through this program, we are investing in individuals who can step into complexity, discern what’s needed, and lead with wisdom, courage, and clarity.”

Additionally, Catalyst offers students more than a classroom experience. It places them directly in the life of the Church by serving, learning, and growing alongside experienced leaders in a Spirit-filled environment where lives are continually being transformed.

Through intentionally designed practicum experiences, students rotate through key areas of church leadership, gaining a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to lead effectively. They are equipped not only with theological depth, but with the practical skills needed to serve real people in real communities. Students are given the opportunity to engage in global ministry across regions such as South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Holy Land. Through these immersive trips, they are able to broaden their perspective and deepen their heart for missions. These experiences are made possible through the generosity of partners and come at little or no additional cost to students.

Catalyst currently serves approximately 70–80 students, with around 40 students engaged in on-campus undergraduate coursework and others participating through flexible online programs. Four additional partner locations are also available in other parts of the U.S. as Catalyst continues to expand access to this model nationwide.

This partnership and many others are part of Nelson University’s broader commitment to form leaders who are ready to serve, to lead, and to help shape the future of the Church.
