Nelson University Powers $141 Million in Annual Economic Impact Across Texas

Waxahachie, TX — Nestled on 70 quiet acres in North Waxahachie, Nelson University is doing more than preparing students for meaningful careers; it is quietly driving economic growth and helping shape a stronger future for the region. A new report from the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT) reveals that Nelson contributes an impressive $141 million annually to the local economy, reinforcing its role as a vital community anchor and long-term regional partner.

While classrooms remain the heart of the university, Nelson’s influence extends well beyond campus walls by supporting jobs, partnering with local organizations and infusing millions into the Waxahachie economy.

“Our greatest impact is not just measured in dollars,” said Dr. Kermit Bridges, President of Nelson University. “It’s seen in the students who build their futures here, the employees who serve this community daily, and the alumni who stay to lead and give back. That is the legacy we are proud to build.”

More than a place of learning, Nelson is a catalyst for opportunity. From student internships and faculty-led community projects to research partnerships and local business support, the university continues to be an engine for economic and civic progress.

A Closer Look at the Numbers:

  • $62 million in direct spending by the university, employees, students, and visitors
  • $73 million in indirect and induced economic activity as those dollars circulate through the region
  • $17 million in university purchasing, benefiting local vendors and service providers
  • $25 million in student spending at restaurants, shops, housing, and transportation
  • $15 million in employee spending within the Waxahachie area
  • $3 million in visitor spending from university-hosted events and tourism
  • $2 million in capital investments supporting local construction and infrastructure
  • 1,076 Texas jobs created and supported

Nelson’s impact doesn’t stop at graduation. The university’s 1,587 recent alumni continue to shape the workforce with 38% remaining in the local area and 75% staying in Texas, contributing an additional $5 million in annual economic activity.

Community Partnerships in Action

“Nelson University continues to be a cornerstone of Waxahachie’s growth and vitality,” said Kevin Strength, President of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce. “Its commitment to education, workforce development, and community engagement creates value for our local businesses and families.”

Through hands-on learning, faculty research, and long-standing community ties, Nelson University remains committed to building up both people and place.

When you give, serve, or stay involved, you multiply your impact.
